POPULAR SNOW SPORT

TRAMPERS ENTHUSIASTIC

PROGRESS OF SKIING

Skiing has become an important branch of the activities of the Tararua Tramping Club during the winter season. In the annual report of the club it is stated that the sport has enjoyed a greater measure of progress than ever, both from the point of view of actual participation in the sport by club members, and also as regards improvements in the administrative side.

The ski committee, which was reconstituted before the season began, in order to provide better organisation to meet the requirements of a growing body of ski enthusiasts within the club, continued to function efficiently. The skiing-trips to the Kime ski grounds were attended by 30 and 34 members. The club took the initiative in arranging, the first Wellington inter-club sports in the Tararuas. There was a total attendance of over 50, and the meeting was run by a combined committee representing the five local clubs which participated in the sports. The meeting was very successful, and it was hoped that it will become established as the local skiing event of the year. The club had the honour of being the first holder of the local interclub championship.

The annual winter trip to Tongariro National Park was attended by over fifty members. .The club's sports held there were very successful, although the number of entries for the novice races were somewhat disappointing in view of the large number of neV/ members who learnt to ski during the trip. Several members took part in the New Zealand ski championship meeting, held on Mount Ruapehu during the club's visit. The club team gained fourth place in the inter-club relay race. A small party visited Mount Egmont in October to take part in the Taranaki ski championship.

Six new pairs of skis were purchased during the year, the club now owning fifteen pairs, which were being kept in good order and repair. Sets of coloured flags were also procured, so that races could be run strictly in accordance with the rules of the New Zealand Ski Council, of which the club is a member.
