DECREASE IN BUSINESS
A decrease in both civil and criminal business is shown in the Magistrate's Court returns f6r the quarter ended June 30, as compared with the same period last year. Criminal cases are down on the quarter ended March 31, but there is an increase in the number of civil cases. . The total amount claimed in' civil actions in the June quarter was less than half the amount claimed in the same quarter of last year.
The following are the details for the quarter, those for the corresponding quarter of 1934 being given in parentheses:— . Number of criminal cacu, against males 1175' (1358), against females 102 (132); total, 1277 (1490);
Number .of civil cases disposed of, 1244 (1422); total amount claimed, £20,011 Is lid (£41,028 0s 6d); total amount recovered, £16,956 6s lid (£37,853 0s 6d).
Fees and Fines.—Civil Court costs, £2001 12s Od (£2355 17s 6d); criminal Court costs, £308 2s lid (£271 15s 3d); fines, £815 10s lOd (£842 14s 2d); licensing fees. £63 9s Od (£6l 14s Od); total, £3188 13s lid (£3532 0s lid).
