GOLD CURE GALLOPS WELL

(Special to the "Evoninij Post.") PALMERSTON N., This Day. There was plenty lo interest watchers at Awapuni yesterday morning when Levin candidates galloped and horses claiming steeplechase engagements were sent over the country. In addition, some of the youngsters were given barrier practice, with Dave Stevens officiating, and they acquitted themselves well. I The morning was fine but the course proper, which was available for fast work, was very heavy. The flags were | well out, though not as far as they were on Tuesday, and the times were; again slow. Possibly the most interesting work of the morning was that done by the steeplechasers. Unfortunately the sun came out just before they started operations and the light for the bxaish and hen coop on the back stretch was very difficult. Riotous and Cardhu, were not required to. tackle the hen I coop and they gave a faultless display over seven fences, five of which were brush. Then Gallivanter and Cometra were sent round over ten fences, including the hen coop, and the task proved to be just two fences too many for Gallivanter, who hit the back brush and came down on his nose, but recovered only to tip out at the hen coop. Cometra. touched one or two 'fences but otherwise jumped well. Riotous (L. Parkes) and Cardhu (S. Anderson) took the first three fences together, but Riotous, who was jumping brilliantly, showed the way to the fourth, and from that on had too much pace for Cardhu, and he was well clear over the remaining fences. It was a very fine exhibition on the part of Riotous, but Cardhu, an acceptor for the Waitarere Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase at Levin, did'not disgrace himself, for he jumped soundly if not quite as quickly as Riotous. Among the first to work were Hunting Lodge (A. McCormack) and Round Score (McMillan), who were sent along over six furlongs on the course proper. There was never much between them and they finished solidly to complete the journey in lmin 28 2-ssec. Romp Along has built up into a very nice-looking colt. He was galloped six furlongs alone and he moved welL He was timed to run vlie first three furlongs, in 45sec and he galloped very smoothly over the last bit. . Esteem and Pango were companions over a mile and they were together all the way, neither being required to do his best to cover the last seven in,1 lmin 39 3-ssec. Salt Spray's task was six furlongs.at three-quarter pace and he gave. the impression that he would have liked to go faster. Te Rangitumau and Kitty Quinn were sprinted five furlongs and they were on terms at the post after taking lmin lOJsec. Gold Cure (S. Anderson) and Bodyline (W. E. Pine) were galloped six furlongs and the performance by Gold Cure was a really good one. He soon had charge, the first two furlongs being.put behind in 25* sec the first three in 40 J, and the full distance in lmin 24sec. Gold Cure finished solidly, clear of Bodyline, who did not appear to relish the going. Bazaine (W. J. Broughton) was sprinted three furlongs down the back and then eased up. He was timed to cut the first three out in 40Jsec, going very nicely. Though Bold Jim (W. E. Pine) was the early leader in a seven-furlong flutter with Tudor (Brown) and The Drone (W. J. Broughton), the .others had it on him over the last bit.. The first two furlongs were put ■behind in 29sec, the half-mile in.-:sfiJsecY five furlongs in -lmin 12sec, and the tull distance in lmin 40Jsec. _ " Full Throttle (J. Mclnally) and Hunting Mars <L. H. Jones) were responsible for a very smart effort over five furlongs, particularly Full Throttle, who had drawn clear to complete the distance ip lmin 9sec. Additional riding engagements ior Levin have been announced as .under: —L. H. Jones, Arctic K^ng-, Golden Chest, and Golden Enterprise; G. Tattersall, Sundancer (twice), Pylon, and Royal Guy.i . . ■ \,\
