HUTT VALLEY CHARGES
Referring to the criticism which has appeared regarding his remarks at the last meeting of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board, Mr. J. W. Andrews said today:—"No good purpose could be served by entering into a newspaper controversy with those who are endeavouring to draw a red herring across the scent by discussing matters which are foreign to the main line of my argument for a reduction in the board's charges. I merely desire to say that at no time have I suggested or considered any reduction in pay for the staff on hourly rates nor have I even mentioned any reductions of existing salaries. "It was only at the time when, after all cuts had been restored, the general manager provided for additions of £600 for higher-salaried officers and recommended a classification which, if adopted, will entail another increase of £429 during the following year, and applied for six months' leave of absence on salary for himself, that I considered it was time the consumer had some share in the distribution."
