NOTES ON RACING

(Special from "Rangatira.")

LEVIN, This Day.

Air Laddie was not troubled to repeat his first day's success in the Pukehou Hurdles, thus accomplishing the same ieat as Transact did last year. Diamond was the first over the initial fence, where Enif crashed, but going into the1 back Air Laddie ran up to him and out-jumped him at the hurdle near the five furlongs post. At the second to last fence Diamond was on terms again, but Air Laddie did his best from that point and won decisively by three lengths from Diamond, who mulled the last fence and had to outstay Arctic Star on the flat beyond to recapture second place by a length and a half. Petrarch and Park Acre followed at intervals, with Count Willonyx well back. Oratory, the shapely two-year-old daughter of Gainscourt and the New Zealand Cup winner Oratress, showed an attractive turn of speed in winning the Waikanae Hack Scurry at her first appearance. Only Merlyn" beat her away, but she raced to the lead in rounding to the straight, and continued on and won easily by two and a half lengths from Merlyn, who held Popette off by a length. Sfle v the fourth maiden offspring of Gainscourt to be produced by L. G. Morris tor Mr. T. A. Duncan during the past tea days, and she looks the best of thfttn. After the placed horses Count Roussillon was handy in fourth place,'with Kitty Quin, • Nightlass, Lady Hoariri, and Kia Tina following.

In a keen betting race Might was a hot favourite for the Timi Kara Handicap, but after lying third till three furlongs out he began to stop in surprising fashion, and finished fifty yards behind the field. The winner was Lapel, who looked an unlucky runner on Saturday. Lapel followed Salt Spray, Full- Throttle, Might, and Pladie till three furlongs from home, where Full Throttle was taking charge, but he then dashed round the others and was a handy second at the straight entrance, and he came right away, winning by three lengths from Eminent, who just cut Full Throttle out of second dividend. Lady Konald , was fourth, and then came-Salt Spray, Gainsfld, and. Pladje. : ,

Royal Banquet, who had made a fair race in the concluding event on the first day, was a rather surprising second favourite for the Rangiuru Hack Handicap, but' he proved that the confidence in him was not displaced. Settling down in third place behind Te Rangitumau and Gold Mission, he went up to second position along the back, and then took charge nearing the three-furlong mark. He was galloping away from the field entering the straight, and he won qnextended by three lengths from Boudoir, who shot up near the finish, cutting Tupurangi out of j second place by a head, with Hunting Bag only a neck away. Aussie Ra, Gold Mission, and Gay Boy were almost in line next.
