BRICKS FROM STONE

A new industry has been established at Boldon Colliery, County Durham, where, the owners of the pit, the Harton Coal Company, have erected modem brick-making plant, states the "Manchester Guardian." For twenty years stone out of the pit has been accumulating in a huge heap at the pithead, estimated to amount to nearly 2,000,000 tons. During this period the stone has been "weathered" to such an extent that it has been found to be suitable for the manufacture of bricks.

The kilns already employ about 30 men, and it.is expected that when the plant is working at full capacity the weekly output will be about 250,000 bricks.

It is understood that the suggestion was made by a surface worker at the colliery, and successful experiments were then carried out.
