N.S.W.' BY-ELECTION
SYDNEY, June 2.
Unusual interest was evinced in the by-election on Saturday for the Newcastle Federal seat, which was rendered vacant by the death of Mr. David Watkjns, owing to the candidature of the rival Labour parties, namely, Mr. D. O. Watkins, Federal Labourite and son of the former member, and Mr. J. E. Smith, the nominee of the State Labour Party led by Mr. Lang. A third candidate was a Douglas Creditite, Mr. H. Sykes.
The latest returns indicate that although the margin between Messrs. Watkins and Smith is at present narrow, Mr. Watkins is expected to win
