TRENTHAM WINS AT LAST

Trentham's unlucky day was relieved in the Te Horo Hack Handicap, when Arctic King, at a useful price, finished from the clouds to take the main Share of the stake^of! Alby a few yards from 'the post. Half-way through the race Arctic King was last, a position he usually holds, and his rider (L. H. Jones) was wise enough to wait patiently. He had not improved much in actual position at the straight entrance, except that he was closer to the leaders, but over the last furlong he unwound a briljiant burst of speed along the outer and was again easing up at the post to win by a head. '

Arctic King had recently been improving with each race since his resumption, and he was in the money one day at Wanganui. He is a three-year-old bay gelding by Rabbi from the Kilbroney—Snowstell mare Snowland, the dam also of White Doe and

Arctic Star, and as Snowstell was also the grandson of Rabbi his pedigree shows unusually close inbreeding. He was bred by Mr. J. Fuller, and he is held on lease by the Trentham trainer W. J. Woods, who won two races with him in the spring shortly after he took him over. As a two-year-old last season T.^R. George had him for a time on lease and raced him twice.

Alby was well placed all the way, patiently ridden by R. Reed, who had him third at the straight entrance and then brought him through, but the winner finally finished all over him. Ethiop, a big favourite, ran a fair race in a good position ■ most of the trip, but the best he could do was third two and a half lengths off. Whetuma, on whom S. Wilson again moved much too soon to have him up second to Joystick at the straight entrance, weakened into fourth place, but is worth remembering. The best of the others were Royal Banquet and the expended Joystick. Leprechaun, after being the first to begin, ran much below form, but Cyclopean showed a lot of early speed and should be a possibility when next raced among maidens. RESULTS IN DETAIL.
