SPORTING SONG EASILY
Sporting Song, leader practically all the way in winning, the Kuhu Maiden Flat Race, for which he was nearly twice ,as well backed as any other • runner, was much overdue for his initial success, but now that it has come he may go on to better perforni- ; ances. He raced past Count Roussillon '. and Nightlass in. the. first furlong on ■ Saturday, and although Meritor and Entheos went with him till'they tired ;he really always looked the likely winner, his victory being comfortably obtained by a length over Popette and Eka Tere. As a two-year-old last season Sporting Song showed much promise, one of his seconds being first up. in the Avondale Stakes, when he separated Whenuakura and Sporting Blood, but he has required, considerable. patience since, though he has not been extensively raced. He is a black gelding by Hunting Song from the Kilbroney —Counterfeit mare Lionskin, so that he is a full-brother to the Australian ■ winners Hunting Lion and Jungle - Song. Previously, he was raced by • Mr. F. Parker, of Auckland, but he - now carries the colours of Mrs. G. M. ' Bennett, of Palmerston North, who also owns Chief: Marionette, 7 and for whom he is trained at New Plymouth , by H. Dulieu. Popette, who was twice placed at Darinevirke, is improving and is due at any time now. She was always in a handy position behind the leaders on Saturday, but she was all out at the post to hold second money from Eka Tere, who finished fast along the rail from Well back. Terry, prominent most of the way, was right up fourth, with Garter Red, Entheos, and Count Roussillon nearest of the others. Count Roussillon and Nightlass Wth failed badly after gaining an advantage at the start, and Meritor ran wide entering the straight Entheos is much more forward than the other two youngsters L. G. Morris produced* at Woodville, and he is a well-built and attractive-looking individual who should not be long in opening his win- : ning account.
