THE OTAKI MEETING

WALTON PARK WINS CUP

TOTALISATOR FIGURES UP

The weather was fine and' mild for the opening day of the Otaki Maori Racing Club's Winter Meeting at Levin on Saturday, and although several warm fancies failed badly to materialise the racing on the whole was keenly contested and there were many excellent finishes. The attendance was good, and the betting was always ahead of last year's figures. For the day the investments amounted to £6495, as against £5297 twelve months ago, when the meeting was held at Otaki, a satisfactory increase of £1198. After the recent rain the track was soft, but otherwise it was in splendid winter order, and with the going much better than usually prevails at Otaki. It seemed, however, a little shifting on the home turn, where several horses failed to handle it.

Trentham horses were heavily backed on several occasions, four of them being the actual favourites, but it was a black day for the centre, relieved only by Arctic King's success at a good price in the last race. . The winner of the Cup event was the Opakiowned and trained Walton Park, whose showing was an improvement on his immediately prior efforts, but in accord with his recent form in the South Island. The Wellington-owned but Otaki-trained Cottesmore was successful in the sprint. The meeting was well conducted and the last race was run right up to the minute, after the schedule had drifted nearly a quarter of an hour in the early races.
