MAY WEATHER
A DEFINITE CHANCE
After a succession of six months with above normal temperatures there was a definite change in the weather during May. Although there were several periods of fine, and at times mild, conditions, the' greater part of the month was colder than usual with strong southerly winds prevailing.
The mean maximum temperature was 55.6 degrees and the mean minimum 45.4 degrees, the average for May being 57.4 degrees and 46.4 degrees respectively. The approximate mean temperature was therefore 50.5 degrees, which is 1.4 degrees below the normal secured over a period of years. The highest maximum temperature— 63.7 degrees—was registered on May 14 and the lowest—37.3 degrees—on May 26. The average grass minimum temperature was 41.6 degrees, being 1.1 degrees above normal. The coldest temperature occurred on the night of May 25, and was 27.1 degrees, being the only frost for the first month of winter.
The rain registered during the month was only 3.50 inches, which is 17 per cent, below the average for May, but rain fell on 19 days, two more than the average for the month.
During the month there were 137.4 hours of bright sunshine, 67 hours more than the average for the month of May.
May proved a windier month than usual, the daily run averaging 255 miles, as against the average over past years of 219 miles. The windiest 24 hours were those that ended at 9 a.m. on May 2, when a run of 551 miles was recorded. This was a north-west blow. There were two days with gales, both southerlies experienced mainly during the night of May 22 and the morning of the 23rd.
A few flakes of snow fell oh the 22nd, and on the 21st there was a severe thunderstorm in the morning accompanied by hail and rain. Hail also fell on May 7 and 22. A -thick fog covered the city nearly all day on May 29.
Barometer pressure during the month averaged 29.964 inches, the normal average being for May 29.974. The highest reading was 30.430 inches on May 27, and the lowest 29.243 on the 2nd.
