PAYING HER WAY
AITSTKALIAN FINANCE
MR. LYONS IN LONDON
(British Official Wireless.) (Received May 31, 10.50 a.m.)
RUGBY, May 30.
Bankers, ship owners, and merchants interested in Australia attended a dinner in honour of the Commonwealth Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, in London last night
'In his speech Mr. Lyons referred to the recovery in the finances of Australia since 1931. Instead of a deficit of £40,000,000 which then faced them there had been a steady improvement and a surplus each year. Since he and other Commonwealth Ministers had left Australia for England the improvement had continued. There were only 7,000,000 people in Australia, but in one month since he had been in England the financial position had improved to the extent of I £1,000.000, and they entered the year with the prospect of a balanced Budget
The situation,. he added, had been dealt with by no fantastic methods, but by recognising that as a nation they had to live'within their means, pay their way, and so earn the respect of the world.
