OBITUARY
MRS. MARY ALICE STUBBS
The death occurred at her residence, Hawkestone Terrace, recently of Mrs. Mary Alice Stubbs, widow of the late Mr., John Stubbs, and mother of a well-known Palmerston North family. The late Mrs. Stubbs was born at Barrow-in-Furness 78 years ago, and shortly after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Stubbs decided to come to New Zealand, making the long sea trip by the small sailing ship Alastar, the voyage occupying 16 weeks. On arriving in New Zealand Mr. Stubbs took up. farming and made application for a block of land in the Kairanga, which was then in its virgin state for the most part. Disposing of his farm property to his brother, Mr. Stubbs launched the Manawatu knitting mills in Palmerston North, and was connected with them until his. death in 1912. Mrs. Stubbs took an active interest over a long period of years in the work of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, being one of the earliest members of the Broad Street Methodist Church. Two of her brothers and two sisters also came to the Dominion, and she is survived by her two sisters, Mesdames H. Sinclair, of Palmerston North, and O; Russell, of Wellington. . Her brothers, Messrs. Joseph Croft, of Palmerston North, and John Croft, of Wellington,-passed away some years ago.
The sympathy' of a wide circle of friends will be extended to the four sons and four daughters, the members of the family being Messrs. T. and J. P. Stubbs, of Palmerston North, Mr. J. H. Stubbs, of Dargaville, and Mr. H. Stubbs, of Wellington, Mrs. F. Bradshaw and Misses M. A. E. and L. Stubbs, all of Wellington. There are six grandchildren.
