MEN SENT TO GAOL

Six men who were found in a brick kiln in Rolleston Street a few minutes after midnight were each sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour, when they appeared before Mr. E. D. The men were William Adolphus Cunningham, aged 51, a wool classer, Albert. Henry O'Malley, aged 42, a labourer, Patrick Murphy, aged 52, a labourer, Patrick Jepson, aged 43, a labourer, Charles Peter Kenny, aged 43, a painter, and Francis Warnes Fry, aged 51, an engineer. All except Murphy pleaded not guilty.

Constable Downer said that at 12.5 a.m. today he and Sergeant O'Donnell and Constable Hansen found the' six accused in a brick kiln. in Rolleston Street. Cunningham said he had permission to be there.. "

Constable Hansen described empty methylated spirits bottles which he said, were lying around the men in the straw. All the men appeared to be under the influence of methylated spirits, and all smelt of it. The police had visited the kiln as the result of a telephoned -complaint. ■"- ■ •

Cunningham said that a manjiad given him permission to" shelter in the kiln, and Kenny said that he "just strolled in to have a lay down."
