MR. R. H. PACKWOOD
ROUND-THE-WORLD SURVEY

On the completion of the Waitaki hydro-electric scheme the New Zealand Government arranged lor the engineer in charge of its construction, Mr. R. H. Packwood, to go abroad to study modern engineering developments. Mr. Packwood, who has been accompanied throughout by Mrs. Packwood, left New Zealand in December, and arrived in London a week ago. In the course of a most interesting and instructive tour, they saw the head works of the Sydney water supply and other public works; irrigation systems in the interior of Java; the Naval Base and air ports of Singapore; the Perak River hydro-electric scheme and tin-mining field in ths Malay States; road and railway works in the Khyber Pass; irrigation schemes in the Punjab, the new city at Delhi; and the bridge under construction at the Nerbudda River, near Baroda. Roads and buildings at Jerusalem and the new harbour works at Haifa were features of their Palestine travel and bridges near Paris and Nice, and. the Sautet Dam in the Maritime Alps, near Grenoble, interested them in France. The new railway station at Milan and the swamp drainage works at Littorio, south of Rome, were outstanding features of the Italian tour, the Tirso and Coghinas Dams and hydro-electric power stations were seen in Sardinia, military defence works were viewed at Gibraltar, the El Chorro irrigation and power scheme near Malaga, and irrigation at Granada, in Spain, while the El Kansera Dam and irrigation works near the capital, Rabat, and the Sidi Machou Power Station and other works in Southern Morocco greatly interested them on the Moroccan tour.
Mr. and Mrs. Packwood intend spending a few weeks visiting engineering works in England, Scotland, and Ireland, and then to go to Norway and Sweden. They will return to New Zealand, via Canada.
Mr. Packwood speaks very appreciatively of the courtesy and assistance extended to them everywhere, and says he was much, struck with the obviously high regard in which New Zealand is held abroad.
