HERE AND THERE

A Pleasant "At Home." Mrs. T. E. Y. Seddon was "at home" yesterday afternoon at her charming house at Wadestown, when she had invited a number of friends to meet the Hon. Mrs. R. Vane, with whom she is shortly going to hold an exhibition of pictures. A big log fire, in the drawingroom, and vases and bowls of fine chrysanthemums, made a ciieery welcome to those who had felt that the atmosphere outside was rather cold. The wonderful view from the big "picture" window of harbour, hills, and town was much admired, and it was decided by some that Wellington from the heights was a city hard to beat in the way of beautiful setting. Mrs. Seddon received, wearing a slimly cut gown of deep blue ring velvet with trimming of silver lame. With her was Mrs. Vane, who. was smartly frocked in stone blue crepe patterned in beige, with a small blue toque. She wore also a charming shoulder posy of orchids and carnations. Afternoon tea was set in the dining-room, the table having a beautiful lace cloth and a bowl of late roses and winter foliage. Tea and talk passed the time most pleasantly, and evening shades were beginning to fall before the guests left the. party. Pukerua Bay Social. A very enjoyable social and dance ■ was held at Pukerua Hall to raise funds for the Wellington Free Ambulance. The hall was crowded, and the festivities were kept up till a late ■ hour. Mr. H. Mayer was M.C., and an orchestra of five conducted by Mrs. 1 Ames provided the music. Mrs. Roffe and Mr. Roffe (superintendent of the : Free Ambulance) and Mr. R. L. Button, representative on the Free Ambulance executive of the Hutt County Council, were present, and a letter was read from Mr. Norwood, president, thanking the association for its generosity to the Free Ambulance and its effective work for the welfare of Pukerua. As the result of this function an amount of more than £18 will be contributed to the funds of the Free Ambulance. Messrs. Button and Roffe both congratulated the Pukerua residents upon the success of their social. The thanks of the Ratepayers' Association were conveyed to the committee of ladies who provided an excellent supper, to Mrs. Ames for arranging the orchestra, and to the decorating committee. Special mention was made of Master Trevor Parnell, who sold over sixty tickets and conducted a lucrative competition. The whole effort, was a credit to the unanimity, good feeling, and team workv of the Pukerua ratepayers. An Afternoon Party. A delightful farewell party was given on Saturday by Miss Beatrice Jones, Lyall Bay, in honour of her sister, Miss Babs Jones, whose marriage will take place shortly.
