CRICKET PROMOTION

CASE OF KARORI CLUB

ACTION DEFERRED

An opinion that the committee would be justified in enunciating its view that the Karori Cricket Club should be promoted to senior status next season was expressed by Mr. P. B. Broad (chairman) at a meeting of the Wellington Cricket Association's management comj mittee last night, and,' put in the form of a motion, it gave rise to lengthy discussion. All members viewed with favour the claims of the Karori Club to be advanced to the senior grade, but there was a difference of opinion as to whether Karori should take the place of an existing senior club. Those present were: Messrs. P. B. Broad (in the chair), W. P. Walker, J. H. Phillipps, A. Ronaldson, W. Hammond, E. C. Wiren, E. Aim, A. Varney (hon. secretary), and W. J. R. Christophersen (hon. treasurer). The record of the Karori Club was outlined by the chairman, who pointed out that it had won the second grade championship last season and had filled second place in the club championship. He stressed the fact that the club was a district one with a district ground and a very considerable district following. His motion was seconded by Mr. Walker, who indicated that he saw no objection to there being a bye in the senior grade. To avoid a bye and the relegation of a team, Mr. Hammond advocated the formation of a colts' team. These and other matters gave rise to much discussion, in which the desirability of having no more than eight teams in the senior competition was stressed. The positions of existing senior clubs were considered and, if it came to a matter of relegating one, Mr. Ronaldson thought' that Petone would have to go down, while the chairman considered that Karori should take Institute's place should a change be made. It was explained that an expression of the committee's opinion was being sought. "It may be," Mr. Broad added, "that the whole thing will be taken out of the committee's hands at the next annual meeting." Clubs', however, were entitled to be given an indication. . Several amendments were moved, and one by Mr. Wiren "that the whole matter be left to the incoming management committee" was carried by 4. votes to 3. i
