VICTIMS OF ARAB RIFLES • BRITISH AIRMEN'S FATE ' (Received May 13, 3 pjnl) ■ .- BAGDAD,. May 12. A party of Arab horsemen.unexpectedly brought the bodies of Pilot Officer Newman' and Aircraftman Hawkins to a railway station near Bagdad. They fired rifles in the ; air in the traditional Arab salute, and then decamped. The authorities interpret "the action as a gesture of respect to tSe dead and also as an indication that the destruction of the aeroplane was unpremeditated, ' but' the work of irresponsible sharpshooters: The remains had been reverently treated and conveyed a .considerable distance. They will be buried in the Air Force cemetery with full military honours. , , According to a cable i message received on Saturday a British-aeroplane was flying Over the middle of the Euphrates provinces, where some tribes - recently revolted, when it was 'fired on.and crashed in flames. The occupants of the crashed machine were Pilot-Officer Newman and Aircraftman Hawkins. The Air Ministry'announced that the machine was engaged .in reconnaissance duties and had not yet been located.
