GOOD NOVICE EVENTS .Harrier clubs were very active on Saturday afternoon. "In addition to'the visit of the Kaitere Club, of Masterton\ to the Olympic Club, the Scottish Club held a nonce-event, the Wellington Club had a six-mile race at and. the Presbyterians had a run at Eastbourne. / BROOKLYN CLUB. The weekly run held by the Brooklyn harriers took place at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Lee, Hataitai, 40 members being present; The itrail was followed along Graf ton Road, Grass Street, and the-Town Belt to half way down Mt Victoria, across • Constable Street tb the opposite hills until Sutherland Road was rached, then Lyall" Bay, and back via Queen's Drive and Evans Bay Road. The rimners were divided into four packs in charge of D. Millar, V.-P. Fitzgibbon' A Barclay, and G. Prosser. ■A feature of the running was the fast pace set : by: the various packs/several individuals standing out prominently; particularly A. Thompson, B. Hiscock, K. Watson, who are newcomers, and A. Macgregor, R.'Martell, and'N. Johnson. Afternoon tea was served by the host and hostess, who were .thanked on behalf of the club by the president, Mr. F. W. Moore. Scottish; club: The Scottish' harriers' annual novice race,was run over a distance of 2% miles. The course started. at the Wellington Tennis Association's clubhouse and' ran past the Miramir. tram terminuß, skirted the foothills, through the well-known cowyard"vinto Tarihinu Road, which was followed' to Miramar Aveiue to Para Street, from , where. tram lines were followed to the finish.. . ■ . ■. There were 14 entries, the smallest for a number of 'years, but a good race resulted. The limit men set off at a good pace, making fidl use' of their allowance, and at the-: ebwyard J. Murphy (lmin 40sec) was leading-from Colson (lmin 10 sec).and Harlam {lmiri 30sec). R. Woodcock (45sec): had gained much ground at this point. Going along Miramar Avenue Murphy was still leading Colson, Woodcock, Bruce, and Honore in- that order. On "reaching-Para Street Colson took th.e t load from Murphy, w.ho, how-ever,-hung on determinedly, and these runners pulled well away from the third man, Woodcock; Just before striking the tramlines Colson collapsed, leaving Murphy to win comfortably in 16min 45sec. Much i sympathy .was- expressed for Colson who- had run- a Bound, heady race, displaying a "good::knowledge of crosscountry "running. Woodcock did not maintain his pace in the straight, and Bruce finishing fast beat him out of second.-, place in- order following, Honore; Pragnell, Haslam," Leeks, Wynn, and Manon. ': Honore gained fastest time with lSmin52sec, and the next best were Bruce 15 mm 57sec. and Woodcock 16min 2 1-Ssec. Next week's run will be from St. Cuthbert's Church Hall, Luxford Street, Berhampore. ' -■ - - PRESBYTERI AN CLUB. , The Presbyterian Iplub had a large muster at its> run from Eastbourne on Saturday. The trail, laid by Barnes and Comrie, led "to the foot of Gollans Valley Road, up and along the ridge to the south, then down into the valley and back by the road, a distance of about 6 miles. The run-in, held before the run, resulted in a win for Wainwright, D." Reid was second, and G. Robinson third. The colts had a longer run than usual. The novice race will be held next week from Miramar Terminus. ; OLYMPIC CLUB. About 30- runners and supporters of the Kaitere Club travelled down to Wellington as guests of the Olympic Club. Four packs, comprising over 50 runners, followed an excellent five mile trail from the All Saintß' Church, Hataitai. The course ran up Hamilton Road and down overlooking the Patept Slip, round Mt. Victoria, and over Pirie Street to the top of. the ridge, followed the road to the South' Wellington Fire Brigade station and .home via Wellington Road. Afternoon tea after the run was greatly appreciated by the runners and supporters of the club as was also the help given by the club's lady supporters. WELLINGTON CLUB. ■ Over thirty members turned out for the training run of the Wellington Harrier Club at Kelburn. Four packs followed a six mile course leading over the.viaduct to Northland via the wireless hill to Wadestown, returning along Wilton Road. A handic&p run-in from the Northland Fire Station resulted as follows:— A. Bond, .1; G. Larsen, 2; H. Brady, 3. The opening race of the season, the Maiden Handicap, is to be held next Saturday at Miramar. HUTT VALLEY CLUB. A novice race was held on Saturday by the Hutt Valley harriers over a threemile course starting and finishing at the H tt Park. • Hartley and Nuttall led the field for the first VA miles when Calvert went into the lead from Turner who was showing up well, closely followed by Suckroo and McK.ee. Alone Gracefleld Road Walsh moved up into fourth place and' this order was maintained to the finish. The result was:—Calvert (lmin 20sec), 1; Turner (lmin 30sec), 2;' Suckroo (2min 30sec) 3. Fastest times were:—Calvert, 19min 21 sec; Turner, 19min 52sec; and Walsh, 21min 20sec. Next week's run will be from the Belmont Hall, at the invitation of the club president.
