■ 1 SATURDAY'S CONTESTS A cold southerly was blowing when the' Port Nicholson Amateur Road Cycling I Club hold its opening ride on Saturday The patron, Mr. A K. Thomas, declared' the season officially open, and Mr. A. J. 1 Couchman provided a prize for the nest I race. , 1 ■ .The result of the race, one of 22 1/£ milrs over the Island Bay -course, was:—W 1 Smither (12mm), 1; M. Scott (9mhi), 2; K. Wilson (2mm), 3. Time, Csmin. I Fastest times were:—X. Wilson (2miu), I COmin 7sec; A Sowerby (2min), 60min ' Ssec; ■J. Watson (smin), 04min Bsec. PONEKE CLUB'S EVENT. Twenty-two riders contested the 22 miles race open to senior and junior membeis of the Ponekc Cycling Club at Kilbirme on Saturday. First place went to R. Robson, a junior, who won easily off a handicap of Smin. R. Ulmer gained fastest time. The course comprised two laps of the Breaker Bay cutting course, around the toreßhore of the Miramar Peninsula, and finishing down the Miramar Wharf straight. D. Bewley (15min) led at the finish of the first lap, and the next two, C. Aldndge (12imn), who had gained a minute, J° d, ,X- McLeod, were moving well. B. Walsh and Robscn were next, h.ivmc Rained 3%min on the leader, J. Piunti and J. King (smin), who had lost only jOsee to the scratch men, were also in a good position. The three sciatch men, Ulmer, Blackett, and L. Walsh, took 29min lQsec for the 11 miles; Robson finished the race nearly a minute ahead of B. Walsh, who was 1% minutes ahead of Bewley, who finished third after riding the last two miles on a j T-itire- Knlg was fourth. Blackett and Dlmer finished four minutes behind the winner, Ulrrer crossing the line lengths ahead of Blackett The results were:—H. Robson (Bmin), 1-...8. Walsh (15mm), 2; D. Bewley (15 mm), a Time, 63rain 44sec. Fastest time:-E. Ulmer (serf, 1; P. Blaekett (scr), 2; 11. Houston (2%min), 3. Time a9min 51seq. Next Saturday the club will hold a 10%'m. Ies »«ice for seniors and juniois ut Kilbirme. The Petone Club held a 2.-; miles time trial for seniors and a 15 miles for juniors on Saturday afternoon. This was the fiist event of this type .staged by the club for a long time, and judging by the enthusiasm displayed, will descivedly be moie popular in the future It was evident that quite a number of the ndeis were inexpet lenced at this type of udmg. Fiom observation it appeared that some riders were too sl6w on the outward journey, evidently holding too much in reserve for the return. The riders were dispatched at intervals of one minute, and the senior winner UJ?^ UP ln the insistent Charlie Bicgs McGurk was the first off the mark but was soon ovet taken by Steicns P Roe was caught by Biggs ut the turn.
