AMATEUR BOXING

MASTERTON TOURNEY The Wairarapa-Boxing Association new a most successful amateur tourney in the Dixon Street Hall on Saturday night, a number of. Wellington boxers taking part. ' What promised to be a brisk contest between L. Parris -(Tartan Club, Wellington), -9st' 91b, and J. Brown (Masterton), 9st 91b, terminated suddenly m^the second round, -Parris being declared the winner on a technical knockout 'Brown had no condition, and the Wellington lad put him down-for two long counts before the referee intervened. --.'-■ Two midgets, F. Henderson (Masterton), 7st 81b, and E. White (Miramar) 7st 41b, gave a clever display of spirited boxing. ..The boys were-well matched, 'but 'Henderson's aggressiveness, over-the final round earned him the decision. E. Adams (Miramar), 9st 41b, and J. Bradbury, (Pahiatua), 9st 51b, fought a .flrstrclass draw. Bradbury countered his opponent's advantage in reach by.leading rights and lefts to the body. There was nothing between them. D. Palmer '(Masterton), flst 61b, made a fine recovery in- the final round, and piled on the points per medium of a straight left, in defeating J. Canute (Miramar), 9st 81b. It was a bright 'botii; particularly over the last round F. Finnigan (Tartan Club), Bst 61b, who was runner-up to J. Cadwallader '(Wairarapa)'at the last New Zealand championships, gave a clever and scientific display when matched with D. Sindal (Miramar), Bst 61b. Sindal showed a decided penchant for clinching, and this robbed the bout of much of its brightness-- In the open Sindal was an easy mark for Finnigan, who won by a good margin' of points. . R. Orr (Masterton), 12st, and B. Symonds (Masterton), list 71b, fought a cautious bout, but Orr came.to light in the , third round with a series of lefts ajid rights to the head and body, and took the decision. . Honours were with M. Howard (Mastertoq)<; 10sf 61b, when the referee stopped; the bout and gave the decision -to his opponent, F. Mclvor (Tartan Club), ipst*slb. Howard was having all the best 'of a spirited bout when Melvor,, a. wild' hitter, opened an old cut on,his opponent's head which bled so niuch»that the bout was stopped. H. Ratner (Masterton), lOst 61b, one of the cleverest amateurs in New Zealand! defeated'K. Cameron (Miramar), lOst 61b. Apparently realising that he had little chance in open fighting, Cameron relied on 4 clinching, thus spoiling what should have been vone of the best bouts of the night. The best fight was provided by N. Kennedy (Masterton), Bst 121b, and B. Cording I (Miramar), Bst 121b. Both lads mixed matters freely- in a strenuous encounter that was full of bright incident. Kennedy won by a narrow margin. K. Coveney (Wellington), Bst 51b; experienced little 'difficulty in defeating S. Paul (Miramar), Bst 2lb. The bout was stopped by the referee in the thifd round. It was more of an exhibition bout.
