BONFIRES AND ROOKS

NEIGHBOURS DISAGREE

Rooks, bonfires; noxious smells and vapours, and the firing of blank cartridges were alleged to have been features of a neighbours' disagreement which found its sequel at Birmingharii Assizes, reports the ''Manchester Guardian." . ■. .

Mrs. Annie Grenville claimed damages for an alleged nuisance and an injunction against John Troman, Clara Troman, and Annie Troman, of The Elms, an adjacent house.

s Mrs. Grenville alleged that Mr. and the Misses Troman had caused noxious smells, vapours, and smoke to pass through her house. The Tromans counter-claimed,, alleging that Mrs. Grenville had caused guns to be fired in order to vex the Tromans, and had frightened their horses.

Counsel for Mrs. Grenville said that the Tromans wanted a rookery, and attracted the rooks by throwing down corn. The rooks picked away the mortar of Mrs. Grenville's chimney/and caused £100 damage. She had therefore directed, her chauffeur to fire blank cartridges to frighten the rooks. The Tromans then climbed, upon an iron roof arid hammered on it. Fires were built near her boundaries and old motor-tires, stable refuse, and. old boots and shoes were burnt for a week, and sometimes four fires were burning at once.- .

Grenville, cross-examined, denied that she had complained because cows belonging to the Tromans lowed, or their horses neighed, or that the pigs, and cockerels made noises Mr, Justice Humphreys at this stage cbhsente'd' to the case standing over with a view to settlement, .
