THE BATHS PROPOSAL
COMMENT ON REJECTION
Commenting today on the result of the polj on the tepid saltwater baths proposajl, Mr. W. Gerrie, chairman of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association said tha.t he was naturally disappointed, mos-e especially as the other two loan .proposals, involving larger amounUs. had been carried. "I do not think tf,\e ratepayers realise how much we are up against it through lack of bathing facilities in Wellington," he remarked. "For years our educational work bjis been hampered, and we feel that hind there been tepid saltwater baths, instead of 1500 learners' certificates beiing issued annually the number would toe nearer 5000. It seems to me that the ratepayers probably took the same viiew as we did, that the baths proposeri were too small for the requirements of the city. Moreover, the estimated cost, which we think is too high, probably influenced the ratepayers to -vote against the proposal. I regret i Jiat the many thousands who voted for the proposal will not be able to enjoy tepid saltwater swimming in the^mea ntime, and would like to assure them that their support is warmly appreciate cl."
