GEORGE V
PROCLAIMED KING
ANNIVERSARY TODAY
CEREMONY IN LONDON
Twenty-five years ago on Tuesday the Proclamation of Prince George as King was signed by the Privy Council, and twenty-five years ago today he was proclaimed King. Following closely as it did upon the death of King Edward VII the ceremony of Proclamation was not an occasion for rejoicing, but was marked throughout the Empire with expressions of loyalty. The Proclamation of King George V as King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and of the British Dominions Beyond the Seas, and Emperor of India, was made on the morning of May 9, 1910, in London and other cities in Great Britain and in various parts of the Empire.
In London the ceremony was a most impressive one.. Following a fanfare of the State trumpets, the Garter King of Arms, Sir Alfred Scott-Gatty, C.V.0., at St. James's Palace, proclaimed George V King. Enormous crowds had gathered, and when the Garter King of Arms had read the Proclamation the crowd joined with him in shouting "God Save the King." A band then played the National Anthem.
Escorted by an imposing cavalcade of Life Guards, the Garter King of Arms proceeded to Charing Cross, Temple Bar, and the Royal Exchange, at each of which places the Proclamation was repeated with the same ceremonial and expressions of loyalty. Seven thousand troops lined the route taken by the Garter King of Arms and immense crowds thronged the streets. During the ceremony the artillery fired Accession Salutes at St. James's Park and the flags on the Tower of London, which had been at half-mast as a mark of respect to the late King, were hoisted to the top of the masts and remained there for the remainder of the day. The Proclamation was also read from the front balcony of Friary Court, where Queen Victoria was presented to the people at the outset of her reign so many years before. .
King George and Queen Mary, who were both mourning the death of King Edward,, did not appear during the ceremony.
