SCHOOL CERTIFICATE

Criticism of the Associated Chambers of Commerce concerning the school certificate examination was replied to yesterday by the Minister of Education (the Hon. S. G. Smith), who stated that the opinion of the Associated Chambers was based apparently on a misconception of the requirements of the examination. "Specialisation to the degree which I feel sure is contemplated by the Chambers of Commerce is prevented by (1) the course laid down for all candidates for the school certificate examination; (2) the requirements covering the holding of free places; (3) the functions of the schools; and (4) the good sense of the teachers themselves," said the Minister.
