WAS PENALTY JUSTIFIED ?

The incident on the final day at Riverton that brought a month's suspension for tho . Masterton horseman C. Carroll occurred about thirty yards off the post in' the Autumn Steeplechase, when Black Banner, ;whom he was riding, and Graball were battling for second money. It looked as if Carroll was most unlucky to be punished. According to an Invercargill critic's view, Black Banner had Graball beaten when he crossed over and caused the interference. Both horses were very tired, and Carroll had no chance of preventing the trouble. Under the circumstances the punishment was not only harsh, but unwarranted. It was Carroll's first ride, and he took the mount because there were no jumping riders available owing to injuries having taken heavy toll of 'their ranks. He handled Black Banner like a veteran, and it wafi a case where justice could have been tempered with mercy. I The placings were not reversed.
