THE PASSING OF JOE MAUDE

After completing a judging appointment at the Goulburn Agricultural Society's Show in Sydney on March 23, Mr. Joe Maude collapsed and passed away. The late Mr. Joe Maud held a position as a poultry judge seldom attained by any individual. In conversation with the writer a few years ago he mentioned that he had visited New Zealand on special judging appointments no less than fourteen times, so that many fanciers will mourn >liis passing. To die in harness is the wish and hope of many men, and right up to his death Mr. Maude lived an active life. His stud farm in Sydney commanded much attention, and only recently a valuable importation of stud stock arrived from England to improve his stock. Quality and not quantity was always his maxim, and those who have seen his breeding methods will be the wiser for the knowledge gained. Mr. Maude was 75 years old, and leaves a widow and family of six to mourn his loss. Few men have the gifts he possessed, and although at times his criticism was harsh, it was always fair and constructive. He said what he thought, and was always ready to back up his opinion with expert knowledge. Australian fanciers have lost a judge of poultry whose place will be most difficult to fill. His son, Mr. Harry Maude, is already well known as a judge of both poultry and dogs, and it is something to remember that his good work will be carried on by his son. The late Mr. Maude was the chief poultry show reporter employed by "Poultry Newspaper," with which publication he has been associated since its earliest days, and his frequent contributions will be sadly missed. His was a full life, and his memory will last for many a year.
