QUESTION OF NAME

TARARUA TRAMPING CLUB

A recent unsuccessful attempt to change the name of the Tararua Tramping Club to the Tararua Tramp> ing and Ski-ing Club has no doubt prompted the following article under the heading of "Editorial Notes" in "The Tararua Tramper," the club's magazine. "The name of the club is still the Tararua Tramping Club (Incorporated), '-say's the article. "At the general meeting convened to consider a motion to include the word ski-ing in the name, it was stressed that in addition to tramping, ski-ing is an important club activity. > On the other hand, it was pointed out that mountaineering is becoming increasingly popular and if the name of the .club is to correctly indicate the club' pursuits, another change would have to be made in a. few years to give due prominence to this branch. Thus, instead of altering the name to describe the activities of the club, it would ,be better to gradually change the connotation of the words Tararua Tramping Club to include ski-ing, winter sports, and mountaineering, 'as well as tramping. "Although it was thought fit to consider changing the name, and although the suggestion was hot adopted by the general meeting, the club activities are in no way changed. This 'Tramping Club' organises ski-ing> trips to the Tararuas and the club has a number of pairs of skis which • are available for the use of members on these occasions. There is. also an annual winter trip to Tongariro National Park, and last year the Tararua party was the second-largest club party at the Chateau." •• . •
