ADDRESS OF LOYALTY

TO ARCHBISHOP O'SHEA

MOST FAMOUS OLD BOY

Truly enthusiastic, was the ovation accorded by the: old boys of St. Patrick's College yesterday afternoon to their most distinguished fellow old boy, his Grace Archbishop O'Shea, when he was presented by them with an address of appreciation and loyalty and a de luxe copy of the' Jubilee Publication. Oh rising to reply, his Grace received a tumult of applause, which was repeated with the singing of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" and a full-throated rendering of the college "Boomeranga" at the conclusion of the ceremony. The address was read to the Arcnbishop by Mr. Leonard J. Coakley, an Auckland City Councillor. It was. signed1 by D. H. Hurley, S.M., Leo J. Daly, and Bernard McCarthy, K.S,G., and ran as follows:— _ . "We, your fellow old boys of bt. Patrick's College, assembled together to celebrate its golden jubilee, greet you as one who has brought honour to the college. "We recall that you were enrolled as a pupil of the college on the very day its doors first opened for the Christian education of youth; that while a student you became a leader of your fellows in study as in play; and that as one of its first offerings to the priesthood you fulfilled the highest purpose which the college proposes to its sons. Your zeal and devotion in your sacred ministry attracted high place and duties of care* in the government of'the church, and these were filled so worthily and discharged so ably that you were called upon at first to assist and then to succeed the late Archbishop Redwood in the rule of trie archdiocese of Wellington. A few months ago we joined with you in lamenting the death of that venerable prelate, not least among whose glories is to be accounted the founding of St. Patrick's College, and we know that his paternal solicitude for the welfare of the college will be equalled by your filial enthusiasm. "And so we greet you, with pride as an old boy, with loyalty to your office, with reverence towards yourself,., and we earnestly pray that for very many years you will be spared to carry out that great work that has been entrusted to .you.and so shed further lustre on your old school."
