TRAFFIC BY RAIL
INCREASE SHOWN
Despite-the lateness of Easter this year, a substantial increase over last year's railway traffic was shown in the Wellington district,- yesterday's figures being up by about 25 per cent, over those of last Easter Monday. The complete figures for the Easter period are not yet available, but it is believed that the increase shown yesterday will be maintained for the whole period. .-.'.' .. . ■. ; Railway. : officials w state that the traffic since Thursday has been, as heavy as for any previous similar period at Christmas or New Year. Outward traffic was unusually heavy, on Thursday, and Good Friday, which is usually an off day, proved exceptional, most of the travellers being passengers from the south or residents of Wellington who were unable to go north on Thursday. Traffic was again heavy during the weekend, hundreds going to the beaches, or to country golf courses.
Yesterday 2431 passengers went out of Wellington'and 4995 returned, as against 1860 outward and 3970 inward passengers last Easter Monday, an increase of 30 per cent, in outward traffic and of over 25 per cent, in inward traffic. Heavy traffic is expected again today, as a large number of holi-day-makers have yet to return to the city.
In addition to rail traffic, the road buses of the Railway Department carried unusually heavy traffic, a large number of relief buses being required. Travellers by private cars and service cars have also been numerous, accommodation at some of the inland and coastal towns being at a premimum over the weekend.
