CANTERBURY MEETING
PRINCESS DOREEN'S EASTER
MIGHT ALSO SUCCESSFUL
(Special to the "Evftning Post.") CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The weather was cold butane for the opening of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting at Riccarton yesterday. There was a large attendance to witness some [excellent racing. The totalisator investments amounted to £32,027 10s, as against £31,786 10s on the opening day last year, an increase of £241. FAILURE OF PAHU. Nightcap eet the pace in the Kildare Brush Hurdles, Coll, -Jolly Beggar, Fleeting Glance, and Palmary following him past the stand. Nightcap was six lengths in front at this stage, and still had an advantage of four lengths at the mile post, where Jolly Beggar was second. Pnlmary moved -up five furlongs from home and joined Nightcap at the entrance to the straight. They jumped the" last hurdle together, but Palmary wore his rival down, winning by two lengths. Jolly Beggar was six lengths away. Rasouli was .staying on to be fourth.. Fleeting Glance tired, and Palm never became prominent. Palmary won at South, Canterbury a fortnight ago, and he will do better yet, as he can stay. KINNOULL'S CHAMPAGNE.' Silver Sail and Kinnoull led Hororata and Heritage in the early part of the Champagne Stakes. Silver Sail was beaten when the course proper was reached, but the other three were practically on terms a furlong from the post., Hororata retired a little further on,, and Kinnoull finished better than' Heritage, winning by a neck.. Hororata was two lengths away, with Greek Shepherd close up. Kinnoull, by the young sire Pink Coat, finished tip a season of consistent form with an attractive performance. Heritage went well, and should be a good three-year-old. He may have been unlucky, as he appeared to be unbalanced when he and Kinnoull bumped into one another near the winning post. . ;.; ■ GOLDEN KING DECISIVELY. Glowlight soon toot charge in the Autumn Plate,-with Sky, Rover, Earthquake, and Golden King next, and Chidden joining in after going three furlongs. Glowlight, after !beirig two Jengtha in; front at the'six-furlong post, was joined by Golden King nearing the straight,. wheVe Chidden also moved up. Golden King and Chidden went. on in the straight, the former winning decisively by a length. Glowlight was two lengths away, with Sky Rover and Star Raider next. The winner is a good stayer who may be 'seen to advantage in distance events later on. '' WIN AT FIRST START. The fifteen two-year-olds who ran* in the Russley Plate included a number who had not• raced previously. , Concert Pitch, one of these newcomers, was in front all the way and won easily. Grey Honour, Viking, and Tail Light were always prominent, and Silver Fox and Fiord were never far away Over the last two furlongs. The winner is a Balbo.a gelding; ,his dam being from the same^famjly as Autopay. HOT FAVOURITE'S DEFEAT. Princess Doreen was first'-'out" in the Great Easter, but Royal Sceptre, Cranford, Rebel Chief, and Rerepai soon headed, her; Royal Sceptre had Rerepai as his nearest attendant at the half-mile •post, where , Tizzy and Sam Smith had also joined in among, the bunch behind the two leaders. Royal Sceptre' retired when the straight was reached,' Rerepai going on in front, with Princess Doreen, Cranford, Tizzy, and Silver Streak handy, and Sea^Fox: moving tip fast;1. Princess Doreen challenged at the ' distance^ and went on: to beat Rerepai., by a length. Sea Fox came on with a c6od run, but just failed to stall, off ;a late 'challenge from Kamal Pasha. Then came Tauramai and Variant, both finishing very fast. Rebel Chief collapsed in the straight, and Silver Streak, Cranford, Tizzy, and Sam Smith were others who failed ]n the run- home. Inflation began .slowly, and soon was a long way back. Princess Doreen opened the season by winning the Winter Cup, and eincetheh' shehas done well. Rerepai, who was a'red;hot favourite, has also been a very consistent performer this season. Better placed early, Knmal Pasha and Sea Fox would have boen harder to beat. EASY FOR LINGUIST. Joyous and Song Boy were the early leaders in the Comtenay Handicap,'with Linguist handy. Tooley Street,,after starting from the inside, ran .to the-.outside of the track and seemed to be ,in front when well on the course proper'.;l Linguist came through inside the distance, Hand won by a length from Frenchiei': who, with a late run, beat Some Boy by > neck. Joyous was close up, 'with Tooley Street, Rebel Queen, and Polygraph next. The winner, a Paladin filly trained at Wingatui, showed promise of , stamina as well as speed. The rider of Tooley Street lost both, his etirrups at the start, but for which he would have been hard to beat. ■■-■■■.■" DOUBLE FOR T. R. GEORGE. Fair Weather was soon in charge in'the Sockburn Handicap, Imperial; Spear, : Horowhenua, ' Knock Out, and Cleaner being next. Might joined in after -a-, furlong. The order of the four leaders was unchanged to the straight, bu'fei.only Fair Weather went on. flight then put in his claim, while' Fracas appeared-, a -little further onM A good finish-. saw .Might beat Fair Weather by a neck, with Fracas a neck away.'i Minerval was next, a head in front of \both;\cbmin£vdii strongly, the others being headed 'by Tout Je Monde and Silver Sight, who'were well placed»at .the(home turn. The winner, a half-brother by Paladin to Silver Sight, has been in T. H. Gillett's stable since January. He was one of the outsiders of the field, and paid a sensational dividend.
