BOUND AND GAGGED
BY MAN WITH GUN
MOTHER AND HER SON
TINAKORI ROAD AFFAIR,
A melodramatic armed hold-up, in which an elderly woman, Mrs. Byrne, and her son, Joseph Byrne, were bound and gagged at the point of a revolver, was enacted in a house in Tinakori Road last night. .
It is understood that at about 8 p.m. a man who is well known to Mrs. Byrrie and her son, entered their house, and finding only Mrs. Byrne at home, threatened her with a revolver, which was later found to be loaded, and bound and gagged her. She had to receive medical attention today.
The intruder waited for the arrival of Joseph Byrne, who is a- young man, and when he entered about an hour and a half later he also was bound and gagged, though not before putting up a struggle. The man is alleged to have then taken £3 and some shillings "from the clothing of Mr. Byrne before leaving. • '
Another occupant of the house came in at about 10.30 p.m., and hearing the cries of Mr. Byrne, discovered the plight of the two helpless people. Detectives searched the city all last night and today, and this afternoon they arrested a middle-aged man on charges of assaulting Mrs. Byrne so as to cause her actual bodily harm and of robbing Joseph Byrne while armed with a firearm. He will appear in the Magistrate's. Court tomorrow, when the police will seek a remand." ~ -
