ST. PATRICK'S COLLEGE
JUBILEE FUNCTIONS
ANZAC DAY PAEADE
Old Boys of St. Patrick's College are gathering from all parts of New Zealand to participate in the jubilee celebrations, which begin here tomorrow. Pressure of business and other reasons must of necessity prove an insurmountable obstacle' to many; but it is known that at least 200 former wearers of the blue and white will attend, from outside of • Wellington, while the number of old boys resident in Wellington runs into several hundreds. The St. Patrick's College jubilee celebrations committee, representative of all old boy interests, has been at work for weeks past on the organisation of the celebrations, and the next three days will see the fruition of their efforts in a series of functions that will fittingly commemorate the fiftieth anniversary pf the founding, of New' Zealand's leading Catholic secondary school. The three, days'' programme commences with a Solemn Pontifical Mass of Thanksgiving, in the Basilica, Hill Street, at 10.15 o'clock tomorrow morning. The celebrant will be his Grace Archbishop O'Shea, S.M., D.D., himself the first pupil enrolled at, St. Patrick's College, and all but one of the assisting clergy are old boys of the college. They will be the Very Rev. D. Hurley, S.M. (1899-1902), the Very Rev. A. Burger, S.M., M.A. (1902-1903), the Very Rev. W. Geaney, S.M., D.D. (1901----1903), the Very Rev. A. Cullen, S.M., B.Sc. (1905-1908), who is the present Rector of St. Patrick's College, the Very Rev. J. Dowling, S.M., M.A., Rector of Silverstream College, the Rev. C. Casey, S.M.,1 D.D. (1902-1904), and the Rev. U. McGlone (1913-1916). The occasional sermon is "to be preached by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Morkane, D.D., M.A. (1897-1898). About 400 present boys of St. Patrick's College and of Silverstream College will attend the Mass, the . local boys assembling in Guilford Terrace and the Silverstream boys marching from Lambton" Station. As the Basilica will be filled to capacity, it is advisable' for old boys to arrive there as soon after 9.30 a.m. as possible so that all will be seated by the time the ceremony begins. Music- for the Mass will be provided by the boys' choir of Silverstream College, under the conductorship of Father C. Feehly. At .12.15 p.m. tomorrow, in the Council Chamber of the Town Hall, the Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop) will convey to the college and its old boys the city's congratulations in a civic reception. Archbishop O'Shea and Mr. B. McCarthy, the president of the Old Boys' Association, will reply to the Mayor. ■ > The Provincial of the Society of Mary will tender a luncheon to the Hierarchy and clergy at the college at 1.30 p.m. About 70 priests, many of whom are old boys, are expected to attend. ' TOMORROW NIGHT'S RECEPTION. Elaborate arrangements have been made, to entertain the large number of guests at the . college tomorrow night at a conversazione and reception by the rector and his staff. Suitable speeches will be made to mark the occason, the highlight of which will be the presentation to the trustees of the ' National Memorial Art Gallery of a, portrait in oils of the late Archbishop Redwood, the founder of the college.; The picture, which is the jubilee gift of all former students of the college to the national portrait /collection, is the work of Mr. F. V. Ellis, A.R.C.A., of the Wellington Technical College, and was completed only a month before the death of hi's Grace. The Mayor, Mr." Hislop, who is acting chairman of the trustees in the absence of the Prime Minister, will receive it. A BIG PARADE ON ANZAC DAY. 4'The Anzac Day procession from the college to St. Mary of the Angels in Boulcott Street and thence to the War Memorial should be, from the public point of view, the most spectacular function of the celebrations. \"We want.to make absolutely sure that every old boy marches in the procession," one of the college fathers told a ."Post" reporter, and he expressed his hope that the procession would be a thousand strong. Past and present students are to assemble at the college in Cambridge Terrace by 9.30 a.m. on Anzac Day and march through the city to the church, where a Solemn Requiem Mass for deceased old boys /will be celebrated by Chaplain-Captain Moloney, S.M., N.Z.E.F. (1891-1893). The deacon will be Chaplain-Captain Bartley, S.M., N.Z.E.F. (who taught at the college from 1905 to 1915), the sub-deacon will be Chaplain-Captain Daly, N.Z.E.F.. (lflOO-1903), and the master of ceremonies will'be Chaplain-Captain Murphy, S.M. (1899-1903). Chaplain-Major McDonald, S.M., N.Z.E.F;, will preach the occasional sermon. Immediately after the Mass, the procession will re-form and proceed to the War Memorial, where the rectors of St. Patrick's College and Silverstream College will lay wreaths. A photograph may be taken after this. Oh Thursday afternoon there will be an informal meeting of old boys at the college, and the presentation of an address to Archbishop O'Shea, "the college's most distinguished old boy." COLLEGE WAR MEMORIAL. In the evening the old boys, will as-? semble in the study hall of the college at a reunion, which is limited exclusively to them. The principal function of the evening will be the' unveiling of the handsome war memorial which has been erected in the hall. The Archbishop will perform the ceremony, which will reveal a handsome brass tablet, on which a suitable inscription has been hand-engraved. Some sixtyfive names of old boys who lost their lives in the Great War are on record, but they are not to be placed on the memorial until after the jubilee, as more may be ascertained from assembled former students. An opportunity will be given to old boys -.to contribute towards the cost of this handsome and lasting memorial. While old boys are at'this function their wives or lady friends may attend a private reception at the Hotel St. George. , On Friday morning at 10 a.m. a representative number of old boys wjll visit Karori Cemetery to lay wreaths on the graves of the late Archbishop Redwood, Father B. J. Ryan, a former rectorj and Mother Mary Aubert. Simultaneously in' Hastings and Christchurch respectively wreqths will be placed on the graves of ths late Father A. Keogh and the late Father T. A. Gilbert, both'former rectors of the college. The* rural surroundings and the magnificent modern buildings of Silverstream'College will be the scene on Friday afternoon of a reception to old boys and their lady friends, tendered by the rector and staff. I Cricket, golf, and tennis matches have been arranged for that occasion. The three-days' celebrations will conclude on Friday night, with possibly the most ' popular function of all—the Jubilee Ball in the Town Hall, between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. Indications are that this will be long remembered as one of the best of the larger dances ever held in the Capital City.
