BIG NEW YORK FIRE
MANY FIREMEN OVERCOME
NEW YORK, April 20.
One hundred firemen and several hundred underground railway, passengers were overcome by acrid smoke from a persistent, blaze in a Brooklyn waterfront warehouse today.
The fire ignited a quantity of rub-ber-tar paper, and; with repeated explosions of accumulated gases, defied the efforts of 400 firemen to extinguish it. Great billows of black smoke were sucked into the underground railway, causing annoyance to thousands of passengers while it was necessary to remove hundred, many of whom required hospital attention. The underground- ventilating system carried : the smoke several miles through the tunnels, halting transportation for several hours. In all eight alarms were sounded, bringing 'S3 pieces of fire-fighting equipment and six ambulances, which spent busy hours removing prostrate firemen, many of whom were seriously burnt.
