HORSE SHOW

A SPLENDID SIGHT

LARGE JUMPING ENTRIES

A large and appreciative audience was present at the Show Stadium on Saturday afternoon to witness the ' horse show. This function, held in connection with the Easter Show, is by far the niost successful ever held in Wellington, and in the opinion of many authorities is better than that usually put on at Palmerston North.

A particularly fine spectacle, and one which appealed greatly to the onlookers, was provided by the jumping events. Five jumps of various types had to be negotiated, and the jumping of all competitors was unusually good, considering the large number of entries in the four classes \ield. ■ There were no fewer than 23 entries in the. maiden jumpers' competition, which must be nearly a record. In most of .the contests, the placings were bo close that a jump-off was necessary. Another feature o£ the afternoon's sport was the absence of any serious spills. Not a horse came .down, such mishaps as did occur being due to heavy landings. The W.D.C.M* and B.A. competition was marked by two close shaves, however, one when J. Goodwins AlaUroa" almost came down at the first hurdle, and the other when Miss I. Barton's "Shamrock" made a clever recovery at the second brush jump alter hitting the first. In the dual jump, a young rider J. Amos, left the saddle at the first'jump, but by a brilliant piece of judgment remounted and completed the course. . ~ ~ Several. events, including the maiden wire jump, the championship pony jump, and the musical chairs event, were held over until today, when the show was timed to start at 1 p.m., an hour earlimthan previously arranged. The show is to conclude today. . Mr. S. R. liammoud, of Marlon, is acting as judge.
