FACTORIES AND WAGES
Preliminary figures relating to Victorian factories for the year ended June, 1934, have been issued ,by the Government Statistician. In general the figures show that the manufacturing industries of Victoria have ,made steady progress in production from the low levels of the three previous years The number of factories in operation in 1934 (8896) were 284 more than those registered in 1932-33. The amount of salaries and wages paid (excluding working proprietors) was £22,851,649, showing an increase of £1,633,378, 'compared with the year 1932----33. The average wage was £153 12s sd, compared with £154 10s Id in 1932-33, and £197 Is 6d for the boom year of 1929----30. Fuel and light absorbed £2,765,270, being an increase of £132,312 compared with 1932-33. The value of materials used for manufacture totalled £59,776,270, compared with £5G,757,681 the previous year; while the value in output was £108,496,310, being £6.410,831 higher than the value of output in 1932-33. The value of output in 1929-30 was £122,811,099, but for the next two years dropped to £93,000,000, rising to £102,000,000 in 1932-33.
