Special forecast for Wellington:—

Strong southerly winds to gales. Weather cold and cloudy with intermittent light rain. Conditions improving tomorrow.

The weather forecast is for strong southerly winds to gales north of Westport and Banks Peninsula, but moderating tomorrow, and variable winds southwards with northerlies predominating. The weather is likely to be cloudy with intermittent rain in eastern districts north of Kaikoura and some scattered showers in the central and northern portions of the North Island, elsewhere fair to fine. Temperatures will be cold with further frosts inland in the South Island. While an anticyclone has been covering the northern Tasman Sea and the South. Island, a depression has remained centred off East Cape and has been responsible for strong southerly winds to gales and unsettled showery conditions in the North Island, while between Castlepoint and East Cape there has been heavy rain at places.- Most of the South Island, on the other hand, has experienced fair to fine weather with light to moderate- variable winds. Temperatures have been cold everywhere and in the South Island there were many frosts last night.

At Auckland some showers fell early in the morning but most of the day was fair to cloudy with strong southerly wind. At 9 a.m. today the weather was clear with a strong wind blowing.

In Wellington the weather was cold and mostly cloudy with a southerly wind and occasional light showers. The southerly continued to be strong throughout the night and early this morning a light steady rain fell. The total rainfall at Wellington was ten points and at Lower Hutt seven points. Christchurch had fine weather with light variable winds. There was a slight frost last night. At Dunedin the weather has been fine and clear with a light northerly wind. *
