JUMPER WITH ADJUSTABLE

SCARF COLLAR

The interesting feature of this new tunic line jumper is the two-way scarf collar, the ends of which may be knotted carelessly in front, or carried around the throat in a crossover effect, and fastened at the back with a clip or long brooch.

The jumper is made in alternate rows of 2-ply and French angora wool, and, though knitted throughout in stocking stitch, the finished surface has the appearance of being in a far more* complicated stitch.

Materials required:—Four balls (approx. IHoz each) Angorex in rose rust, 3oz of 2-ply super No. 2043, one pair of No. 10 needles, double ended, six wooden button moulds.

Measurements: Bust 36in, waist. 28in, hips 36in, shoulders 14in, sleeves Win, full length of jumper,' 23in. Tension: Eleven stitches to 2in in width and nine rows to lin in depth. < . . Abbreviations: Sts., stitches; «t. it.; stocking stitch. ....

DIRECTIONS,

Back: Using the Angora wool,, cast on 86 sts., knit back into the backs of these sts. and work oij garter stitch (every row plain) for %in. Now join on the 2-ply and work on in st.st., using 2-ply for one row and Angora for the next, right throughout the jumper. Using the double•pointed, needles, you can start every row from the end the required wool is hanging; all you have to remember is to do a purl row if on wrong side of work or a plain row if on right side. Shape up to waistline by knitting 2 tog. at each end of the needle: every 9th row till you have 72 sts. left. Now increase in

the ■ next,- row by knitting into the front and back of every 7th. stitch. There will now be 82 sts. on the.needle. .Every 20th row from now on make one st. at each end o£ the needle, bo that, by the time armhole is reached, you will have 90 sts> on the needle. ; To shape armholes cast off three at.beginning of next two rows, then knit 2 tog. at beginning and end of every second row-three times. You will now have 78 sts. left. * Work on without shaping till armhole measures 7in on the straight from beginning of shaping; Shape-shoulders'by casting off four sts. at beginning of every row 12 times. Cast off remaining -30 sts. for back of neck. Front: ' Cast on 100 sts. and work the same as at back of waistline (7%in from beginning), when will have 86 sts. Increase one in every 7th st. and by end of the row there will be 98 sts. Proceed to increase as in back so that there will be 104 sts. at armhole level. Shape armholes as follows:—Cast off 6ix sts. at beginning of. nest two rows, then three at beginning of following two rows; then knit 2 tog. at beginning and end of the next five alternate rows. When 2m is completed from beginning of afmhole, cast off middle 30 sts. for neck and, working on with right-hand side; cast on 75 sts. at neck edge and work right across on these 99 sts. for 3%jn. / With right side, of work towards you, cast off 75 sts. and work on the remaining 24 without Bhaping for l%in.
