V.M.C.A. WORK

STRENUOUS YEARS

ADDITIONAL BURDENS

Two of the most strenuous years in the history of the V.M.C.A. movement,, from December 1, 1932, to November, 1934, were reviewed in the report presented yesterday to the twelfth national convention of the National Council of the Y.M.C.A.s of New Zealand. A comprehensive survey was given of activities, with special reference to work in new fields.

! . "It is most encouraging to the Najtional Council," stated the report, "to be able to report that everywhere the situation has 'been held. The figures from-the balance-sheets of 1933 and 1934 indicate the financial position to be the, point of greatest strength, all things considered, in our history as a Dominion movement. This position 'has been brought about, firstly, by the fact that our associations have taken advantage of the special opportunities for public service that have presented themselves during the critical period of depression. For instance, the facilities of the associations "have been placed unreservedly at the disposal of those endeavouring to solve the unemployed boy problem, Secondly, ths boards of directors have seen the absolute necessity of balancing the budget. - This has meant often heavy reductions in the personnel, and the salaries' of the employed staff. "Everywhere there has been displayed a love for the cause, and a tenacity of purpose that has made light of additional burdens. At no time has the voluntary leadership and the service of committees been as prominent as it has been during the past two years. "Not only have we held, our own, but the number of our associations has been increased by two. New associations have been established at New Plymouth and the Hutt Valley. The actual number of young people reached has also increased, and statistical records ■indicate greater activities within- the membership." .
