100-FOOT DROP

SERVICE-CAR SMASH

TWO PASSENGERS INJURED

GISBORNE, This Day.

A Tiniroto service-car left the road and fell over a 100 feet drop after coming into collision with a passing truck on a slippery/road. Two of the five passengers were.injured and were brought to; hospital in Gisbbrne. Mrs. R. E. Barton (Ruakituri) suffered a badly crushed leg, and Raki Mauku head injuries.

An ambulance travelled 140 miles through a storm in torrential rain, taking a circuitous, route via Wairoa to avoid the main road, which was rendered impassable by the rain, and traversed flooded roads over a hill route.

The night mail from the'south has not yet arrived, the truck having been blocked by slips. _^__
