SHOWERS AND WIND
Special forecast for Wellington:—
Strong north-westerly to westerly winds, gale force being reached at times. Probably a temporary change to southerlics this evening. Weather mainly fair to fine, but light showers likely this evening. Cool temperatures.
The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole issued at noon today is for southerly to westerly winds. These will be moderate to strong generally, gale force still being reached at times about and to the south of Cook Strait. The weather will be changeable with showers at times in most districts, but only scattered rain on the east coast. Temperatures will become cooler.
During last night a rather deep low pressure trough rapidly crossed, the Dominion. Yesterday's weather was dull everywhere and during the night rain fell ■. throughout the country. In many parts falls were heavy, especially in the Auckland province and in the western and southern districts of the South Island. Northerly winds also increased in force everywhere and during the night blew with gale force in many places. By this! morning, however, the wind direction had become westerly or south-westerly. ; Auckland had a strong and squally north-easterly wind yesterday, the weather being unsettled and showery. The wind changed to the south-west during last night. ,
Wellington's weather was dull with a fresh northerly wind. Some rain fell during the afternoon and during the night there were several heavy showers, the northerly wind-rising to gale force. The maximum gust was one blowing at a velocity of 68 miles an hour, this occurring at 3.10 a;m. Yesterday's rainfall at Kelburn totalled 14 points, but Lower Hutt had only seven points. The weather this morning was clear with a squaily northwesterly wind.
Christchurch had dull weather, a moderate east-north-easterly breeze freshening during the afternoon. Ten points of rain fell during last night, the wind since 5 a.m. having changed to a strong south-westerly.
Dunedih's weather was also dull with rain during the night, the total fall there being one of 58 points. A northerly breeze changed during the day to a fresh south-westerly. The weather this morning was fair to cloudy. ,
