BERLIN BROADCASTS

SHORT WAVE TO WORLD

DIFFERENT LANGUAGES

LONDON, April 9.

The'"Daily Telegraph" says that Germany has made a remarkable move relating to her short-wave "empire" broadcasts from Berlin. She sent advance programmes and a questionnaire concerning reception and comments on items to the British Dominions. The German service in many respects resembles the British Broadcasting Corporation programmes from Daventry. Berlin sends out short-wave broadcasts from 15 to 16 hours daily on various wave-lengths. For the first zone, embracing Bombay, Batavia, Sydney, and ] ■Auckland, the English language is uSed; for the second zone, the Far East, Dutch is' used; for the third zone, Africa, English is used; for the fourth zone, South America, Spanish and Portuguese are used; and for the fifth zone, North America, English is used.

Officially, the programmes are intended for "thirty million Germans living abroad." Semi-official , documents admit that the service is intended for propaganda for the homeland.
