DOLLAR RATES.
The Associated Banks (other than the Bank of New South Wales) quoted the following dollar-sterling rates today, which,are subject to alteration without notice: — : ■ • U.S.A. Canada. Dols. Dols. T.T. ...; 3.88 ' 3.88% On demand 3.88% 3.89V8 Buying— On demand 3.93% 3.04% It is reported that a Government Committee has recommended the acceptance of an offer by Metropolitan-Vickers to electrify the Brazilian Central Railway, the work to be done in two parts, covering in all a period of 4% years. It is said that the total cost of the work will be £3,000,000. After over three years spent abroad in studying paper manufacturing methods , and research, Mr. J. L. Somerville, industrial chemist for the Derwent Valley Paper Company, Tasmania, returned to Australia last week. Mr. Sqmerville said tests of Australian timbers in the manu-facture-of newsprint had been conducted abroad, and had proved that paper made from certain types of Australian eucalyptus was a commercial success.
