APATHY

THAT DEPLORABLE ATTITUDE

Before the present civic election campaign closes every candidate, Citizens' or Labour or independent,* will certainly discuss at least once that fine old election topic, the apathy of the public, so dangerous because the other side is organising fully for. a victory at the polls that will spell financial disaster for the city, or harbour, or hospital. The other side says very much the same thing, too. Today the meeting of the City and Suburban Highways Board had to be postponed asi after a long wait, those Who attended, the Mayor of Wellington (Mr. T. C A. Hislop), the Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr. J. W. Andrews), Mr. D. R. Hoggard, representing the Hutt County Council, Councillor L. McKenzie, and Mr. G. A. Lawrence, representing the Johnsonville Town Board, were not up to quorum strength. Various suggestions were made as to the date for the postponed meeting and how the meeting could be made| attractive. The Mayor of Lower Hutt | suggested that if the overhead bridge proposal at Thorndon was included in the order paper one more representative could safely be expected to turn U r> Councillor McKenzie remarked that if the clerk could add something about taking another half-million from petrol tax funds, that would make a real certainty of it. Later the Water Board also met— after a wait of half an hour for the missing member to turn up to form the quorum.
