DAY IN PARLIAMENT
MANY TOPICS DISCUSSED Little progress towards the end of the session was made in the House of Representatives yesterday, the whole of the afternoon and evening being occupied with a discussion on subsidised shipping, the Local Elections and Polls Amendment-Bill, and the Finance Bill. The latter measure was introduced during the afternoon, the second reading stage being commenced at the evening supper adjournment. Members did not find fault with the Bill, but took the opportunity it afforded to discuss numerous topics. One of the first points to be raised was the provision safeguarding Mr. Justice Frazer's superannuation, Labour members stating that, while they considered the proposals in the Bill were only justice to the Arbitration Court Judge/the Government should endeavour to do something similar for all sections of the community by introducing universal superannuation. Profits from, insurance transactions, unemployment, and the need for roading and other developmental works were all discussed freely until the debate was interrupted at.midnight.
