NEW STARTING-BARRIER
A new type of starting-gate, is being brought into general use during the present flat-racing season in England It consists of a net over Mhe usual strands ot webbing. It was experimented with at several meetings, including Sandown lark, last year. Its object'is to prevent horses and jockeys from .becoming entangled in the strands. It ia hoped that the new device will put an end to the many serious accidents which ocourred last year. Owing to the frequent accidents, the stewards of the Jockey Club issued .a. notice in the "Racing Calendar" last August, in which they warned jockeys that any who attempted to anticipate the rising of the gate would be severely dealt with. The gate which is being superseded was first used at tho beginning of the 1929 flat-racing season. It consists of »ix strands of webbing stretched between two uprights.
