NELSON NEWS
END OF DRY SPELL A VERY WET MARCH (Special to the "Evening Post") NELSON, April 1. Only twice since 1883 has Nelson experienced a greater rainfall in the month of March than the total of 7.54 inches last month. March, 1907, holds the record with 9.17 inches, March. 1904, being second with 8.62 in. The records which' have been taken indicate that the month of March has seen the break up of summer droughts with quite heavy falls of rain. Ten times in the past 52 years the fall has been over five inches, and three and four inches are not uncommon. However, it is also shown that on an equal number of occasions dry conditions have continued past March, for in ten years over the period men-j tioned the fall has been less than one inch. The record for lack of rain was March, 1911, when "nil" was the entry for the month. The fall this year to date is 13.77 in, compared with 6.26 in last year. Nelson's annual average is 37in. < As a result of the wet conditions during the month, the sunshine total has been considerably affected, being 198 hr 45min, a daily average of 6hr 25min. In March, 1934, the figures were 248 hr 45min and Bhr lmin respectively. The ideal weather for swimming and bathing during the past summer j resulted in a record season for Tahuna Beach. Mr. A. Robinson, hon. secretary of the Tahuna Sands Association, today stated that the receipts from the dressing sheds had been £220. During the season 16,794 adults and 1417 children used the sheds, 4130 lockers being used. The previous record was established in 1933, when 14,191 used the accommodation. Owing to the approach of the colder weather the sheds were closed for the season yesterday, but they will be open each weekend during April. Customs duties collected at Nelson during the quarter ended March 31 showed a considerable increase on the first quarter total last year. The/returns for Customs and " other taxes collected last month and for the quarter are as follows, last year's figures in parentheses:—Customs, March £2994 (£2517), quarter £13,109 (£7560); excise beer duty, March £738 (£872), quarter £2307 (£2914); sales tax, March £1382 (£1390). quarter £4945 (£4877); motor spirit for quarter, £3134 (£2650); tire tax for quarter, £161 (£186).
