Kemp, LL.B., of Weilington, solicitor, was today admitted as a barrister by his Honour the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, on the application of Mr. J. F. B. Stevenson. The death occurred at Christchurch on Saturday of Mr. John Caygill' Clarkson, aged 57, head of the firm of W. B. Clarkson and Sons, meat exporters, and a figure well known for his. interest in racing and in his earlier years in cricket, states a Press Association message. Mr. Clarkson became suddenly ill on February 23, and after an operation appeared to be recovering. However, on Friday his' condition became worse, and he died on Saturday. Dr. Louis Dapples, president of Nestle and Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company, Switzerland, has had conferred upon him the honour of Commander of the Legion of Hdnour from the French Government. In making the presentation, the general manager, Sir James Grose, in a happy speech referred to Mr. Monk's long association with the head office, to which he had been attached for fifteen years. Mr. Monk suitably replied. The death occurred at Timaru yesterday of Mr. Arthur Hope, aged 82.; Mr. Hope, states a Press Association message, was born at Liverpool, was educated at' Rugby, and commenced nil career at Liverpool, working for six years in offices with cotton brokers, West Coast merchants, and underwriters. He travelled extensively, being in Boston at the time of the great fire in that city. He came to New Zealand in 1876. After gaining pastoral experience he purchased a run oh his own account in the Mackenzie Country and carried on sheep farming on a big scale till 1897, when he retired. He had lived in various parts of South Canterbury since.
