ATHLETES RETIRING
As from the end of. this season, Peter Munro, of Wellington, for many years one of N.Z.s foremost amateur athletes, will be retiring .from active competition. It is also announced that two other fine performers, namely S. A. Black (New Plymouth) and C. E. ("Don") Evans (Taihape), have signified their intention of«retiring from championship contests. Each of the trio has a fine record, of achievement to his credit. .':.•..■■ ■■.'. '. ■ , ; Peter Munro first competed at Clydebank, Scotland, on July 6, .1910. In New Zealand he has been a stalwart of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre in the field events department for many years, and at the national championship meetings, he has been a great points winner. The shot and the discus events are Munro's- specialty, and so far as the New Zealand championship meeting is concerned he has practically had a mortgage over the titles for
these two contests since the 1919^20 season. In addition; Munro has won the Wellington discus and shot-putting titles many times and he was also successful at the Australasian championship meetings, the last of which was held in Wellington to 1927. He has the distinction of having registered the best performances by a New Zealander for the shot (46ft OJin) arid the discus (139 ft. 2in). A-man of fine physique, his familiar figure will be missed at the championship meetings, at which he has held sway for so long.
Black and Evans are New Zealand record holders, and both have represented New. Zealand at the Olympic Games. Bla,ck, holds the New Zealand record of'4B 4-'sth sec for the 440 yds, and Evans shares, the New Zealand record of 1 rnin 54 4-sth sec. for 880 yds with D. F,..^ndersph; (Canterbury).
