MR. H. M. DOUGLAS

In the death of Mr. Hugh M. Douglas, who has been Secretary-Manager of the Wellington Working Men's Club • and Literary Institute for the past 14 years, Wellington loses a citizen who was highly respected by a large circle of friends. Mr. Douglas, who was born in Dunedin on March 19,1874, made his home in Wellington 34 years ago, and has resided here ever since. He was also a strong | chess and draughts player. His quickness in sizing up a position stood him in good stead when the Wellington Chess Club celebrated its jubilee nine years ago with a lightning tourney, Mr. Douglas taking second prize in a big field of 54 competitors. For several years he represented the Otago Chess Club on the New Zealand Chess Association. The many wreaths sent on the occasion of the funeral bore eloquent testimony to the widespread esteem in which the deceased was held.
